Alana is the Founder and Creative Director for The Foundry for Art, Design, and Culture. Her experiences, opportunities, and high quality art have greatly influenced the Capital Region and Cohoes, in particular. She is fiercely invested in the revitalization of downtown Cohoes and the surrounding areas, not just in an economic revitalization of a creative community which she believes will ultimately create a more effective economic resurgence.

Her major project for last decade has been the Foundry for Art, Design and Culture. Through numerous competitive grants and the tireless work of her and her husband Jesse, this neglected building has been transformed into a beautiful art space that not only supports local artists, but shares the work of international artists with our local community. The programming at the Foundry includes gallery exhibitions, workshops, artisan events, performances, lectures, film screenings in the main space, and even live music/performances in Alana’s own home.  Every artists/musician/creative she and her husband work with is someone whose work they believe in and strive to promote.

One of Alana’s central goals is to equip creative people with tools for success. Through her workshops that cover the business side of art (marketing, organization, accounting, etc), she aims to teach creative people how to harness their gifts and talents into a viable way of living. She is a true role model for success, innovation, and professionalism. She is eager to share her experiences with everyone she works with and has encouraged many people to venture into this exciting realm with her. In addition to holding workshops, she has organized events for graphic design students to strengthen their own portfolios and meet with potential employers. She is always willing to talk and give advice to artists in need, and has personally taken more than a few under her wing. Through her amazing work at the Foundry, she has been able to connect with her local and regional community, and provide opportunities for the public to have a meaningful experience with art. She truly is an ambassador for the arts.

The Young Philanthropist Award recognizes a next generation philanthropist (under 45) who has had significant impact on a nonprofit organization or a community project through their personal philanthropy efforts.  Leah Slocum has done so by serving as a trustee on the board for the Upstate New York and Vermont chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), as well as being active on committees for a half-dozen local and national charities.  Thank you Leah for all of your hard work, and we hope you continue to contribute to the community for many years to come!  Congratulations!

leah slocum

Leah Slocum accepted the challenge of running for the 2014 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Man & Woman of the Year event in which she had 10 weeks to raise as many ‘votes’ as she was able. Inspired by the loss of her grandmother to Leukemia, Leah embraced the idea of this massive undertaking with an innate focus and drive-she assembled a well-organized team of friends, colleagues, and neighbors and led them in the organization of events, mailings, phone calls, and personal asks. Results were astonishing: Leah successfully raised over $92,000 for the LLS;she shattered all previous records, and claimed the title Woman of the Year.

Recently, Leah has created a partnership within RealtyUSA and her new team will direct a portion of their combined revenue to a pool which will be disbursed each quarter to charitable institutions-a unique structure that will not only provide financial support for those in need, but also introduce younger colleagues to the importance of philanthropy and community engagement.

Leah has served as a valuable role model, and inspiration to a future generation continuously. During her campaign, Leah met then-15 year old Dante who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lymphoma. The 6′ 4″ starting defensive end on the Schalmont varsity football team began an intense journey, one that has produced a wealth of new relationships and bonds. Leah’s record-setting fundraising and her resulting victory in helped inspire Dante, now 17, to run this year as a ‘Man of the Year’ candidate himself.

An estimated 1.12 million people are living in the United States with, or in remission from, leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma with an additional 156,000+ people expected to be diagnosed this year. Money raised by Leah and the LLS provide funding for research to cure blood cancers-the focus on cures has lead to the LLS funding nearly half of all cancer drugs approved by the FDA over the past 15 years.

The Sustainable Communities Award recognizes an individual for demonstrating leadership or innovation in programs or principles that advance sustainability and environmental stewardship in our community. It is our honor to present this GOBY Award to Mark Weinheimer at the 2015 GOBY Awards ceremony!

Mark Weinheimer plays a significant role in our community as well as the entire Capital region. He goes above and beyond every day of his life to cultivate hope for the hungry, leadership for budding farmers, and friendship to hundreds of volunteers who come to the Patroon Land Farm (PLF) with the common mission of helping others in need.

Since 2006, Mark has worked as the Farm Manager at PLF, which is operated by the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. The PLF grows produce for the Food Bank to feed hungry people in our community. In his tenure as Farm Manager, he has educated volunteers, schools, and the community about the mission and vision of the Food Bank and Farm. In addition to his farming responsibilities, Mark has also proven to be a savvy business man who in 2008 created a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program to generate revenue to offset farm operations costs. He has also led the Farm through several capital improvement projects over the years to increase yield and provide additional benefit to the local community. The most recent project was spurred by Mark’s vision to install a new high tunnel greenhouse and drip-irrigation system that would enable the farm to extend the growing season and thus provide more fresh produce to the community in need. This project is where many of the area’s business men and women got a chance to see firsthand what is so unique about Mark and his sense of passion to give back to others.

Mark realized that to help make his vision a reality, he would need to get a volunteer group to believe in him and his idea, and ultimately, to provide financial support and aid in physical construction. In February 2014, Mark responded to an RFP for a service project put out by members of the Leadership Tech Valley (LTV) Class of 2014, a program that is an initiative of the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce and The Chamber of Schenectady County. Mark’s project was selected by the class, and Mark vowed to be there every step of the way to ensure that it was a success. Mark’s vision was remarkable, but his commitment to see the project through to completion was profound.

It is evident that Mark’s mission in life, both professionally and personally, is to serve the greater Capital Region and make sure everyone has fresh produce to eat. Thank you Mark again for all you do, and congratulations on winning this outstanding award!
